Where has A Book Club of One Gone?!

I know it is has been a week since I posted but whew, has it been a crazy week! For those of you who don't know, I have four dogs. My dogs are pretty much my life, other than my family and husband. I am working on becoming a professional dog trainer and behaviorist, I worked at a doggy daycare, I spend more time researching dog food than I do researching my own food...the list goes on. I am currently in school, working on an externship with a private trainer and I also volunteer at a local shelter two or three days out of the week. So that keeps me busy on its own but then add in my four pups and it gets a bit crazy. Just to fill ya'll in I have a 5 year old chihuahua named Lucy, a 9 year old pit bull named Banjo, a 2 year old lab/pointer/pit mutt named Roxie and a 1 year old pit bull named Jasmine.

This picture does not do any of them justice it was after about 45 minutes
of trying to get a decent picture of all four of them.
As an example, cute picture of Jasmine down below.

My dogs are all rescues and each one came with their own set of issues. Lucy I got first and she had been thrown over a rescue's fence. She was beat up, had crate sores everywhere and the vet's opinion was that she had probably not been let out of her crate other than to be bred, possibly. She's people shy and can be snappy with other dogs. Next came Roxie, we got when she was 7 weeks old from the pound. She came with mange, a hernia and she has pretty intense food allergies. About a year and a half after we got her, we fostered a pit bull named Jasmine for what was supposed to be about a month. Her owner never came back for her. She's the sweetest girl ever but she has hip dysplasia in both hips and her shoulder and needs a very expensive surgery along with different vitamins and supplements to keep her mobile. Lastly came Banjo, who, again, we were supposed to be watching until she could be given to her original owner. When we took her to the vet, we found out she was heart worm positive, not to mention she was severely over weight. We treated the heart worms and she is down probably twelve pounds now.

So, to the topic of this post, I have been MIA because we had a crazy dog week. Banjo tore her ACL, Jasmine had a skin cancer scare (benign thank goodness!) and Roxie's allergies flared up out of control and we could NOT figure out why. So, I spent the majority of the week at the vet office and the time I wasn't there, I was trying to figure out how the heck I was going to pay for all these vet visits. So, needless to say, I was a little stressed out this week. Luckily, Jasmine is okay, we figured out what caused Roxie's allergic reaction (Husband had taken her to the store with him and the people there had fed her half a bag of treats with the best of intentions. Husband should have been paying attention and realized those were a type of treat that she can not have) and Banjo..well, she is still gimpin' around but we are hopeful. So, maybe things will calm down and I can get back to my NORMAL crazy life, lol. Crazy is normal. This crazy? Not so much.

The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe

The Way We Fall (Fallen World, #1)The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When a deadly virus begins to sweep through sixteen-year-old Kaelyn’s community, the government quarantines her island—no one can leave, and no one can come back. Those still healthy must fight for dwindling supplies, or lose all chance of survival. As everything familiar comes crashing down, Kaelyn joins forces with a former rival and discovers a new love in the midst of heartbreak. When the virus starts to rob her of friends and family, she clings to the belief that there must be a way to save the people she holds dearest
Because how will she go on if there isn’t?
Why do I do this to myself?! Why don't I check publication dates so that when I finish a book and find myself screaming "What?! No! It can't be over!" I can just go to the sequel that is already published?!

There is an epidemic that had broken out on an island. This by itself captured my attention. I have read a LOT of dystopian/post apocalyptic/people are dying EVERYWHERE/I am hungry books this month. Like...twenty plus of them. This was the first one where the disease was limited to an island. Well, kind of limited. It almost made it more hopeless to me because food was out there, supplies were out there, medicine and help in general was out there, they just couldn't get to anything they needed.

Another aspect that made this book different was that the book was written in a journal style. It focused less on the fact that the electricity was out, that food supplies were low, that sort of thing and focused more on the relationships between the people in the book. I loved the relationship between Kaelyn and Meredith, the way a friendship developed between her and Tessa and I absolutely adored Gav.

It also showed how talents that people have, something that may even just be a hobby, can be cultivated and used in a time of crisis. Tessa liked to grow things, was intrigued by gardening and that became useful during the epidemic. Gav was used to organizing and doing things for himself and that became a leadership type role for him using skills he had picked up through life. It showed how traits that were just a side note in the past come to full light in dark times. Quentin was a bully to begin with and it only escalated as he started to feel the panic setting in because of the situation.

The disease itself, when I really thought about it, was pretty horrifying. It started out as a rash, a cold and then developed into a full blown virus that affected peoples minds. It was described as lower their social inhibitions I think is how they said it in the book. Imagine your loved one getting ill but then acting happier, freer, more honest and outspoken as they got closer and closer to dying. Pretty crazy to think about.

Some people might feel like the book moved a little slowly but for me, it was a refreshing change. However, I am aware that my opinion is most likely biased seeing as how I have been on disaster overload recently. I just really enjoyed the relationship building, the emotions behind every thought that Kae had.

The ending pissed me off though. Won't lie. The ever mysterious Leo, not knowing if a main character was going to make it, not knowing if another main character is getting sick, not knowing what happened to Drew...it just ended so abruptly that I wanted to scream! I really enjoyed the authors writing style, I NEED the sequel but until then, I am off to see if Miss Crewe has any other books out.

But when Bitterblue begins sneaking outside the castle—disguised and alone—to walk the streets of her own city, she starts realizing that the kingdom has been under the thirty-five-year spell of a madman, and the only way to move forward is to revisit the past.

And that is my list! Some of them I actually just found while looking around for books to go on this list. Some of them I fell in love with the covers, others, the synopsis pulled me in. Either way, April and May are going to be busy months for reading!

What books are YOU looking forward to the most?!

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1)Cinder by Marissa Meyer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Robots scare me. Almost as much as birds scare me but not quite. So when I opened this book and saw the word Cyborg I nearly just closed it back up and moved on to the next book. However, I have been doing that a lot lately and promised myself I would not do it again so I plowed on through the androids and cyborgs. I am so glad I did! I loved this book! Yet another author whose writing style I fully appreciated. It was easy to read without making me feel like the story was being dumbed down for me. It was amazing. The story flowed so easily and kept me engaged throughout the whole thing.

The story is a futuristic adaption of the Cinderalla story. There were parts of it that were very much reminiscent of the fairy tale. There's a ball, evil stepmothers, sister and queens and a handsome prince. Other parts of the story were so far from the fairy tale though that you wouldn't even know it was an adaption.

Our heroine, Cinder, was a wonderful character. Her emotions were conveyed in a way that had me feeling what she was feeling. That was what won me over to the whole cyborg thing. She had machine and metal as parts but at her core she was very much human with human emotions. Her love for her sister, her compassion for other people, it was all very touching. She felt shame for who she was, embarrassment for what she had been made into and still managed to express confidence and strength throughout the story as well. I adored her little android friend too and that was surprising to me!

Prince Kai (I love that name!) was an awesome prince. He was compassionate, a strong leader willing to make difficult choices but still showed that hint of vulnerability that makes a great leading character. I wanted to know more about him, about his past and what made him into the person he was so I am hoping there is more of his back story in the next installment of the series. The interaction between Kai and Cinder was adorable! I was rooting for them through the whole story and will continue doing so while I anxiously await the next book which is WAY too far away!

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am a little shocked at how much I loved this book! I started it at oh...midnight or maybe eleven or so and now it is four in the morning. That tells you how much I loved this book. I'll start with what is one of my personal pet peeves and that is writing style. Some times I absolutely adore the plot of a book, I even like the characters but I just can't get over the writing style. I will admit that I can be picky and critical. I will read a book even if I don't love the writing style but if I do love it, it just makes the book that much better. I hate when the sentences are short and choppy but I also dislike when I am reading one long run on sentence. (I use run-on sentences all the time. Thank goodness I am not an author!)  With all that said, I loved Veronica Rossi's writing style! It was easy to ready but not overly simplified and it kept me engaged with every word. It wasn't too descriptive but the world was painted perfectly for our imaginations to build. The formatting was great, the chapters were well laid out and the story was told extremely well through the two POV's.

What POV's am I talking about, you ask? Well, the two main characters, of course! Aria is girl who was raised in a pod type dwelling in which the people there live in a state of virtual reality. Due to a rather dramatic set of circumstances, she is cast out into the outside world. Aria starts off as a little bit vulnerable, she's in a new world and it is huge and scary. The way that her character develops throughout the book is an amazing journey that completely draws you in and leaves you invested in not only the story but also Aria herself.

Our other point of view comes from Peregrine, otherwise known as Perry. Side note, I hate the name Perry. It reminds of that cartoon platypus so I slightly cringed every time I saw the name but that is just a personal hang up. Not a big deal. Perry (twitch!) has lived on the outside his whole life. His character was so very well written for me. At times I adored him, at times my heart ached for him and other times he was just undeniably sexy. We got to see his history, the way he developed as well, gaining confidence in himself and his abilities and it was just awesome to read.

Their relationship developed in a way that I thoroughly enjoyed and the devotion just made me 'awww!' more than once. It began with them hating each other and it has actually been awhile since I read a book that had that sort of theme in the beginning so I enjoyed it. The way things were described was discreet and yet sensual at the same time. I don't think I will ever see or smell violets and not think about this book. I just loved the way they loved each other, as cliche as that sounds. I'm a sucker for romance, that is all there is to it and this book had it in spades.

The side characters were amazing. Despite being 'side' characters, they were were explained and I felt almost as connected to them as I did to the main characters. I can't wait to find out more about them and I am already anxiously awaiting the sequel which doesn't come out - of course! - until 2013! This is for sure going to remain one of my favorite YA dystopians that I've read. Have I mentioned how much I hate waiting?!

Shelf Candy Saturday

I am running a little behind on everything this month it seems. I started volunteering at a local animal shelter two or three days a week plus I started my internship two weeks ago so I have been trying to rearrange my schedule to make everything fit all nicely together once more! I hate feeling all unorganized and out of whack. I am thinking by next week I'll have a system going on that works in working, studying, volunteering, reading, blogging, working my own four dogs, cleaning and making dinner for the family. (I only make one meal a day. The rest is a free for all. Don't worry, it is just the husband that I starve - no kids!) So I sincerely apologize for being MIA for the past week but hopefully everything will settle down starting this week so I can keep up with everything easily once again. New schedules suck!

Anyways, on to Shelf Candy Saturday! Shelf Candy Saturday is a meme hosted by http://fivealarmbookreviews.com. The purpose of the meme is to highlight book covers that we find interesting/beautiful/unique!

This week I chose 2 books, actually. I haven't read either one of the books and know very little about them. Actually today will be the first time that I have even read the blurbs so the stories themselves in no way influenced my choices.

The first book I chose is Touch by Jennifer Snyder.

Seventeen-year-old Rowan Harper knows her life is forever changed the moment her schizophrenic mother commits suicide. What Rowan doesn’t realize is how much her mother’s choice altered her own fate. It’s not until after meeting Jet, a sapphire-eyed dead boy, Rowan begins to learn of her new destiny as becoming her mother’s replacement for something she never knew existed.
First of all, the font seems very plain to me and way too big. Maybe a different color would have worked better. The white stands out but I am not so sure that it is in a good way. I do like that it is kind of faded though, it is a cool addition.

The picture itself is beautiful, the muted colors really speak of a desolation and loneliness. The field she is standing in is empty, isolated and very much emphasizes the 'alone' theme. The birds circling around seem ominous to me, like the carrion birds just looking for their next meal. They might be crows which are a symbol of death in some cultures...I don't know. To be honest though, I hate birds. One of my big phobias and I know nothing about them. They frighten me. It could be a parakeet and it would still terrify me. Birds are scary.

The other obvious thing on this is the way the girl is dressed. If I had not just read the blurb, I would think maybe this is a steampunk novel of some sort. I want to know why this girl is dressed like this! She's so skinny and her clothing is so out of date. I don't know how this relates to the story at all. I don't get it. Is it because there is a dead boy involved in the story? Is he from this era? No clue. What it all comes down to though is that the cover is strikingly, hauntingly beautiful and I like it a lot.

The next book I chose is Betrayal by Mayandree Michel.

Where there is love and power, there is always... betrayal.
At seventeen, Cordelia is an ordinary teen with an extraordinary and frightening secret. A secret that induces vivid dreams which she not only experiences true love, but crippling fear while barely escaping with her life each night. After a life altering event, Cordelia has an unexpected encounter with Evan, the mysterious boy from her dreams, who reveals who and what she is, a descendant of the Greek gods. At that moment everything she knows of her world is a lie, and she must leave the present and go into the past to assume the role she was put on this earth for, safeguarding her ancient empire amidst evil forces that toil hastily to destroy it. In a race against time, Cordelia must decide if she is truly a part of this dangerous world, or risk defying the gods, and ultimately lose the boy who has put a claim on her heart.
So the thing that drew me in about this cover was the color palette. All the muted golds, yellows and creams just blend so well together. They are close in color but different and it makes the electricity that is coming out of her hands really pop out. I like the little bit of light filtering in from between the trees, the different shades of the leaves that are littering the ground.

The clouds are beautiful, fluffy and covering the sky and making the building in the upper left stand out. It looks like the building is elevated, hanging out in the clouds like it is a magical, sort of hidden place. It's intriguing to me and it makes me want to know how the Greek gods entwine in the story. I want to know what kind of powers she has and how she got them, why they suddenly appeared. and how she will deal with them.

Now, the things I don't like? I think the title and authors name blend too much into the background. Where as I thought the previous book's font and color were too stand out, this one kind of just gets lost in the gold tones of the cover.

Both of these books I received for free from Amazon.com which was kind of exciting because sometimes the lower priced E-books don't have the most beautiful covers. Some of them, though, are extremely well done! I look forward to reading both of these!

Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick

Ashes (Ashes Trilogy, #1)Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It could happen tomorrow . . .
An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions.
Alex hiked into the woods to say good-bye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crushes her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom—a young soldier—and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP.
For this improvised family and the others who are spared, it’s now a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human.
Author Ilsa J. Bick crafts a terrifying and thrilling novel about a world that could be ours at any moment, where those left standing must learn what it means not just to survive, but to live amidst the devastation.
I know I have said that I have been torn about my opinion on books before but this time, I am for real. Not that I wasn't for real before but...this book was just so strange to me. The basic plot line goes that this girl, Alex, is out in the woods trying to get some things straight in her head when she meets an older man and his granddaughter, along with their dog, Mina. Something crazy happens, their heads all start hurting and from there the world goes to hell in a hand basket. The book explains that it was a major electromagnetic pulse that is not only killing people but also making young people go crazy or "change". Basically they become psychotic zombies. Alex ends up meeting a soldier who is on leave from Afghanistan (he might have been a marine, I don't remember. He's an EOD tech though. Does the army have EOD's or is that a navy/marine thing? My husband is in the navy, I should know these things but I do not. I failed military wife 101.) and they band together.

Of course, sparks start to fly and I LOVED the interaction between Tom, Alex, Ellie (the granddaughter) and Mina. The are trying to make their way to safety, civilization, anything that will explain what is going. I liked the relationship building between Alex and Tom, I like all the crazy theories and the adventure of it all. I do have to warn that this book can be extremely gory in parts. For example, there was one mention of someone popping out another persons eyeball and eating it like a gumdrop or something to that affect. Yeah. It was nasty. It really just added to the atmosphere and circumstance of what they were going through but it is not for the squeamish.

That being said, the beginning 60% or so of this book was a 5 star book easily. I loved it, I couldn't put it down and I flew through it like it was black tar heroine and I knew I was about to be on an episode of intervention.

So why, you ask, did I make this a four star book?

EVERYTHING changed! Suddenly, it is like a different story and I just got completely confused, overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time and I missed the first 60% so much! Suddenly there are crazy reverends and just so much stuff going on that I was completely lost. I don't want to go into detail and give anything away but I will just that the entire last 40% of the book was a giant sort of "wth?!" for me. It was still a good book, I definitely recommend it. Maybe someone else will get the last part of the book more clearly than I did. Maybe it will be your favorite part of the book! For me, it just didn't do it and I was disappointed. I will be reading the sequel when it comes it out to see if maybe it goes back to the way it was. I am holding onto hope!

Shelf Candy Saturday!

It's that time again! Shelf Candy Saturday is hosted by Five Alarm Book Reviews. If you haven't yet, make sure you check out their blog because it is amazing! The new layout is beautiful as well! The purpose of Shelf Candy Saturday is to display a book cover that you find unique/interesting/beautiful and tell why you like it! So without further ado....

This week I chose Watched by Sharde Richardson. Side note - how cool of a name is Sharde? Anyways, I haven't read this book so I can't give my opinion on the story but the cover makes me want to read it! Here is the goodreads blurb!

Mikayla doesn't want much: just to rock out to her favorite band, become the next Kwiki Stop video gaming champion, and keep her Q-tip habit under control. What she does want is the sight of the sudden inexplicable dark auras around everyone to stop. Problem is, those auras are demons and Mikayla is the last trait holder with the power to ban them. Which is a total buzz kill.
To make matters worse, the town folk of Sulphur Springs don't look the same, and her classmates are a little dark in the eyes. There are murders, suicides, reckless skinny-dipping, gratuitous use of Q-tips, and new found powers that Mikayla must learn to control.  Her past becomes present when a shape-shifter tells her what her true identity is, and how to keep the demons of Hell from nipping at her Converse. Through him she'll discover who to trust, who to kiss, and how valuable her abilities are to the right beings. Because the evils of Hell aren't staying down without a fight...
 Or without her soul.
So, that is that. I am not sure how I feel about the synopsis. A q-tip habit? Strange.  It sounds like a big old pile of supernatural creatures and that could be either a disaster or a really good read. Luckily, we aren't here to review the story! We are here to look at the cover which is beautiful so let's get to it!

The first thing I notice is the red. The red in the title, the red in the girl's hood...it definitely stands out. It reminds me little red riding hood and I wonder if she is afraid of something. Her head is ducked down and her eyes on the ground with her hood pulled up, it's as if she is hiding from something. Either that or she is thinking heavily on something, pondering some sort of circumstance. Maybe it is q-tips, who knows? That is the fun though, it keeps you guessing.

The girl, on her own, is gorgeous. She looks young but I can't decide if she looks innocent or a little dangerous which is interesting in its own. She has a mix of both of aspects, a hint of nervous uncertainty and a hint of innocence. The red makes you think danger though, along with her dark hair and the make up and all. It makes me want to know more about her character, if she will fit the image of the girl on the cover. There are trees in the background, if you look closely you can see the leaves. I am not sure if it is raining or those are little sun spots but either way, it is beautiful. I think I would like to believe it is raining but with the sun shining through at the top. It gives the feel of a storm but the hope of it clearing up and the light shining through again.

My absolute favor part of the cover there is the title. The font is beautiful and if you look closely, you can see that it is shadowed so the word is actually on there twice. Like the title in the front is being watched by the hints of the title behind it. I am not sure that even makes sense but it's the way I see it. Not only that but right at the top, in the middle of the "W" is a little red bird. He's just hanging out there in a sort of an ominous fashion, watching everything that is going on. Is there a bird in the story or is he just there to add to the cover?

And that is my Shelf Candy Saturday! Looking forward to seeing all the other beautiful covers that will be posted!!

Booking Through Thursday

Booking through Thursday is a lovely meme hosted by BBT2. Every Thursday they pose a question for us to answer! Let's jump right into this weeks question!

Have you ever fallen in love with a fictional character? Who and what about them did you love?

Well, that is just a loaded question. Who haven't I loved?! I tend to fall in love with characters pretty easily. Some I love more than others but probably 7 out of 10 male leads in books I read, I fall in love with. Maybe 8 of 10 even. I don't even know where to start but I will give it a shot!

Ren from Tiger's Curse
Ren started out being a little unsure and even a little shy. I loved the way his character developed through out the series. By the last book that was published, he had turned confident, adamant, had a bit of an attitude and a biting sense of humor. I am a sucker for a biting sense of humor. Smart ass boys do something crazy to me that probably isn't healthy. Plus, he isn't your standard American boy next door which was intriguing to me and he speaks a different language! That's sexy.

Travis from Beautiful Disaster
Oh, Travis. You are a hot dysfunctional mess.  I don't know how else to explain him. He is the boy that your mother would have a heart attack over and your daddy (if you are from the south like me) might shoot on the front porch and not feel badly about it in the least. He has a temper, he says horrible things when he is drinking, he doesn't think out his actions before he performs them...he yells, he curses, he's a sinner  but he's also this amazing, passionate, intense, emotional man. I fell in love with Travis because he is the bad boy that all girls dream about but most girls know better than to fall in love with.

Beau from The Vincent Boys
Beau is a Southern Rock Bad Ass. Yes, that did need to be all capitalized because it is a title that isn't easy to earn. He had swagger and sexiness just oozed off of him.  He's a country boy at heart, a bit of a drinker but with an emotional, tender side and a sense of honor to boot. He's got this vulnerability about him that is hard to resist.

Po from Graceling
“I know you don't want this, Katsa. But I can't help myself. The moment you came barreling into my life I was lost. I'm afraid to tell you what I wish for, for fear you'll... oh, I don't know, throw me into the fire. Or more likely, refuse me. Or worst of all, despise me," he said, his voice breaking and his eyes dropping from her face. His face dropping into his hands. "I love you," he said. "You're more dear to my heart than I ever knew anyone could be. And I've made you cry; and there I'll stop.”
That is why I love Po. Po is amazing. Absolutely amazing. He is completely okay with Katsa  being able to kick his ass, he encourages her to be as good as she can be. He accepts who she is and what she wants out of life and yet he pushes her to challenge herself constantly. He's attentive and yet doesn't lose himself in loving her which drives me nuts in some books. He is not ashamed to show his vulnerability or his feelings and he has a beautiful way of
speaking. He's always mischievous, a smart ass,  and definitely bad ass in his own way.

T.J from On the Island
One of the main reasons I fell in love with T.J was because of the way he grew throughout the book. If you haven't read On the Island yet, I highly recommend it. It's different and the characters do have a rather intimidating age difference but because of the circumstances in the book, I barely even noticed the age thing. T.J goes from a teenager to a man in this book and the way he copes with the situation, matures and grows up to be an incredible, responsible, amazing person just blew me away. He was so real. He wasn't a super hero or this sexy bad ass (as much as I love them!) he was a person with feelings and concerns and insecurities and we get to see them all and how he overcomes and deals with everything life tosses at him. The epilogue in this book, centering around T.J. only clinched me being in love with him and was probably the best epilogue I have ever read.
